Aishwarya Rai is back in Bollywood this time with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish. But she's in news for a different reason altogether! Apparently the film which also has Hrithik Roshan as the male lead has released a promo trailer which shows the actress lighting up a smoke.

The trailer as well as the still has come under fire from the anti-smoking people. They are seeing red at the fact that a famous actress is promoting such a heinous & unhealthy act on screen.

Earlier reports claimed that the producers of Guzaarish weren't that sure about the smoking scene being included in the trailer & hence had first made a focus group watch the video. But such claims are being vehemently denied by Siddharth Roy Kapoor of UTV.

“It’s a non-issue for us. Technically, Ash is not really smoking in the scene. It’s a funny scene where she is trying to smoke. It’s a lighthearted and cute sequence that doesn’t propagate smoking at all. In fact, we are making fun of smoking,” says the co-producers of Guzaarish. “Neither did we postpone the film’s trailer nor has the promo been shown to any focus group. It’s not true,” he adds that the Guzaarish trailer has been given a U certificate.

Although smoking in movies isn't regarded as a crime yet, the concerns border on the influence of the trailer which sees a renowned Bollywood actress smoking on the screen. “Ash is not glamorising smoking in any way in the film; you will know when you watch Guzaarish,” insists Kapoor.

Earlier instances of Bollywood actress smoking on screen include Fashion's lead actresses Kangana Ranaut & Priyanka Chopra. Rani Mukerji was also seen smoking in Bichhoo. Kareena smoked in Chameli too. Although none of the scenes glorified smoking but the anti-smoking squad were at the backs of these actress nevertheless.

Ash provides a clarification that the scene was a fun act & the female lead isn't a smoker. She recalls the scene saying: “You saw what happened to me when I attempted smoking in the scene. I coughed and had tears in my eyes.” So her fans needn't worry as Aish isn't really smoking in Guzaarish unlike Hrithik who took to the habit to get the feel of his role.

Bhansali's Guzaarish is all about mercy killing & will see Hrithik Roshan playing the role of a magician Ethan who turns paraplegic i.e. an invalid paralyzed from the lower half of his body. He is treated by a nurse played by Aishwarya who later on develops intimate feelings for Ethan. After Kites & Raavan flopped at the Indian box-office, we hope to see a better response to Guzaarish that will help get these star performers back on their tracks!

Peepli [Live] to be Indian Entry in the Oscars!

Peepli [Live]

Peepli [Live

Peepli [Live] the movie that stole the heart of millions of Indians is set to work its magic at the Oscars now. The Amir Khan Productions movie has been selected as the Indian entry at the Oscars! The film beat his earlier movie '3 Idiots' based on the novel by Chetan Bhagat as well as the National Award winning 'Paa' starring Amitabh Bachchan to make it to the selection.

The political drama 'Rajneeti' starring Ranbir & Katrina was also considered but ultimately it was the no-frills attached, reality movie Peepli [Live] that scored. Apart from these 3, there were 24 other movie including regional ones that the selection committee reviewed for the Oscar entry.

Mr. KS Sethumadhavan who is the chairman of the selection committee says, "Aamir Khan's 'Peepli Live' was selected for its social satire and being a showpiece of our culture and ethos. The film was able to convey the misery of farmers more effectively in its satirical way than it would have been possible in any other way."

Peepli [Live] had grossed about Rs 16 crores at the box-office surpassing its meager budget and making a huge profit. But the immense popularity of the movie was something that arose from the way debut director, Anusha Rizvi had handled the issue of farmer suicides.

The satire wasn't lost as the audience seemed to love the simpleton farmer Nathu played by theatre artist Omkar Das Manikpuri and the lively village of Peepli. Peepli [Live]'s hallmark lies in the fact that it defied the common genre of Indian cinema and had an array of theatre actors essaying the roles.

Apart from Raghubir Yadav famous for 'Mungerilal Ke  Haseen Sapne' no other actor had earlier given a performance on the big screen. The folk music of the movie was also a great hit specially the song 'Sakhi Saiyan to khoob hi kamat hain, par mahangai dayan khai jaat hai' which touched the chords of the common man's heart.

No wonder the selection committee selected Peepli[Live] as the Indian entry to the Oscar awards this year. Amir Khan's earlier movie 'Lagaan' too had made it to the Oscars but failed to win the coveted award. But all hopes are high that this time Peepli[Live] won't miss out and create history by bringing home the Oscar!
