RIM Releases Security Advisory For DoS Against BES And Devices

Posted: 16 Jan 2011 07:31 PM PST

RIM has carved the way with enterprise security and holds a high amount of corporate users in the mobile market, but every now and then they encounter speed bumps that might come in the form of support issues, bugs and security vulnerabilities. While Blackberry doesn’t see near the amount of publicly disclosed weaknesses as other mobile platforms such as Android or webOS, RIM does regularly audit and push updates to BES, BIS and client device software aimed at closing and mitigating possible security risks related to their software. KB24547 is a security advisory that RIM published late in 2010, indicating the existence of a vulnerability pertaining to the PDF rendering and control engine of the attachment service in BES 5.x as well as third party applications that utilise BES core, such as Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Notes Domino and Novell GroupWise.

The advisory details the susceptibility of BES to a possible buffer overflow leading to a Denial-of-Service on a hand-held device. For the vulnerability to be successfully exploited, an attacker would need to have a Blackberry user, with an account tied to a BES, open a modified PDF file. The PDF would be “filtered” through the attachment service and may allow an attacker to execute code on the BES hosting server or hang the machine. RIM has marked it extremely high, with a CVSS (Common Vulnerability Scoring System) score of 9.3 out of 10. It is recommended that all BES administrators obtain the Interim Security Software Update to ensure they are protected.

In addition to the BES vulnerability, RIM has released an advisory for a client-side DoS affecting hand-held Blackberry devices. While the CVSS score is a relatively low 5 out of 10, RIM recommends that all users ensure they are running the most up to date version of their device software. The vulnerability affects many devices running OS 5.0.0.x and causes the browser to hang while processing a specially crafted web page, forcing the user to reboot the device. Advisory KB24841 was issued less than a week ago and affects many devices including the Blackberry Bold 9700, the Tour 9630 and the Curve 9300.

Samsung Wave Bada 1.2 Update To Roll Out Soon

Posted: 16 Jan 2011 11:00 AM PST

Last year, Samsung launched its first bada powered handset – the Samsung Wave. The Wave was one of the most popular handsets in 2010 thanks to its stellar screen (S-AMOLED), killer hardware specifications and the low pricing. Samsung had earlier promised that they will keep on rolling out OS updates for the handset in the future.

Now, the company will soon be rolling out the bada 1.2 update for all Wave owners in Europe thus keeping its promise. The update will be rolled out before the end of this month.

The bada 1.2 update for the Samsung Wave will bring in a lot of changes with it including the usual performance and stability improvements along with bug fixes. bada forums all over the Internet also suggest some new pre-installed widgets like Yahoo search. The update will also install a new keyboard on the handset – ‘Trace'. '

The keyboard is similar to the very popular keyboard available for Android – Swype – where users just need to 'swipe' their fingers through the alphabets of the word they want to write.  The update will also bring in support for FLAC format in the music player along with improving the battery life and GPS performance of the device.

Samsung Wave owners in other regions of the world will get their bada 1.2 update by Q1 of this year. Wave owners in the Europe need to use the Samsung KIES software to update their handset to bada 1.2.

Word Lens : Magic Software Translates Languages in Real-time [Videos]

Posted: 16 Jan 2011 10:54 AM PST

The blogosphere and twitterati are calling it “magic software”. If you think it’s surprising that even in this day and age, with all the capabilities of software, one can still consider some piece of software as magical, then you have to try it out to believe it.

Quest Visual, a startup comprising all of two people, are the ones behind all the buzz.

They have released an iPhone application called “Word Lens”. Word Lens is an Augmented Reality application which does language translation in real-time video. Real-time video translation is a difficult feat especially when done using the computing power of only an iPhone. To top this, Word Lens does not even require any network connectivity. So there is no time lag of getting information from the Internet and then displaying it, which is usually common for Augmented Reality applications.

If you are still not convinced, check out these videos of Otavio Good, one of the founders of Quest Visual , demoing “Word Lens”.

As per Otavio, the application is still in it’s initial version and needs a lot of improvement with text recognition , speed and the number of language it supports.Word Lens is currently supported on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 3G.

It is left to one’s imagination how useful this application can get. Right from reading restaurant menus to road signs, it can become an indispensable tool for tourists.

With plans to be able to look-up the words on say, Wikipedia, read fine-text accurately and support a lot more languages, I think this application which topped the charts on the App Store, sure has a lot of potential.

You can directly download Word Lens for the iPhone from here
