CyanogenMod 7.0 based On Gingerbread, A Preview Is Here Posted: 08 Jan 2011 09:48 AM PST CyanogenMod is the best thing that has happened to the AOSP. It is often better than the official ROM from a performance perspective and makes optimal use of the hardware. The lack of bloatware makes this a choice for many whereas; the option for using Google Apps like Gmail through gapps adds flexibility for those speculative about sharing their data with Google. CyanogenMod has successfully previewed the latest build of CyanogenMod version 7.0 running the Android version 2.3 codenamed Gingerbread. The new build supports A2SD and App2SD that allow users to move applications between phone and SD card storage and options to overclock the device. Another important update is the inclusion of the latest Android market. There are plans to change the default music player in Gingerbread. However, there is no confirmation on the matter. The first noticeable change will of course be the boot animation that clearly says CyanogenMod 7. I have used CyanogenMod for the last six months and highly recommend using CyanogenMod if you have a rooted Android device. View the preview video here. Apple iPhone 3G Running Android 2.3 Gingerbread Posted: 08 Jan 2011 09:48 AM PST The Google Nexus S is the only device to be running on Android 2.3 officially. However, thanks to the modding community most of the popular phones out there including the Nokia N900, Droid Incredible and the Motorola Droid have got their Android 2.3 based Custom ROM. Now, a guy with the nickname – nickpack - and his team have managed to get Android 2.3 up and running on the iPhone 3G. The project is also compatible with iDroid project, which will allow users to dual-boot Android 2.3 Gingerbread and iOS on their iPhone 3G. Here is a link to a video of Android 2.3 Gingerbread running on iPhone 3G. From the video, it is clearly visible that Gingerbread is running a bit sluggish on the handset. The developers behind this project have not mention any release date of this mod. They also did not mention anything on what works and what does not work on this unofficial port of Android 2.3 Gingerbread on iPhone 3G. Hopefully, the final version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread on the iPhone 3G will run pretty smoothly. Viewsonic Announces the ViewPad 4 Posted: 07 Jan 2011 11:28 PM PST Viewsonic has announced the ViewPad 4 at CES 2011. It is an Android smartphone, which offers “tablet power and performance” as well as cellular voice and data capabilities. Viewsonic has already announced the ViewPad 7 and the ViewPad 10 offerings in the tablet space, and with the new ViewPad 4, it has also entered the already saturated smartphone market. The ViewPad 4 comes with a 4.1 inch WVGA capacitive touchscreen display and is powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It comes with a 5 MP camera which can record 720p HD video. It comes with Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and GPS with A-GPS. The pricing details aren’t out yet. It will be launched in the middle of 2011. Going by the spec sheet, the design and the estimated release date, I don’t think it will be seeing any sales at all. By the time it launches, we will have much better Android smartphones in the market by Samsung, HTC, Motorola and others.
