Google Security Engineer Blogs About “Rooting”

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 02:45 PM PST

Nick Kralveich, an Android Security Team engineer, has posted up (via Tim Bray, Android Developer Advocate) his thoughts and concerns about the current state of security on the Android platform. As the amount of Android handsets on the market increases, many users have been "rooting" their devices in order to install customizations, cooked ROMs and unlock third party software and repositories. Nick says that while Google does provide an easy modification to allowing personal boot images by unlocking the bootloader via simple commands (fastboot_oem_unlock), that it is not an indication of lax security. Google developers do "aggressively fix known security holes, including those that can be used for rooting" and Adobe has given credit to how Android uses a sandbox for application segregation. Google is also known for sending security of relevant patches back upstream to a project, yet many simply don't know that rooting is an "active exploitation of a known security hole" says Nick. He says it is "possible to design unlocking techniques that protect the integrity of the mobile network, the rights of the content providers, and the rights of the application developers, while at the same time giving users choice. Users should demand no less." and he is absolutely right.

Android straddles the fine line of providing users with a polished device with a booming application ecosystem and a highly customizable interface with open source software. With each iteration and release of Android, these lines are being blurred and Android is quickly climbing to the top.

Gingerbread Update For Nexus One Coming In Few Weeks

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 02:07 PM PST

Google’s discontinued phone used to usually be the first phone to get major updates. However, it looks like Nexus One owners will have to wait for a few weeks before they see a OTA update.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread

In a tweet from the official account @googlenexus, the folks at Google hinted that the update is coming in the next few weeks.

The Gingerbread OTA for Nexus One will happen in the coming weeks. Just hang tight!

Why this delay? Most probably because Google is now more interested in pushing Nexus S to users and might be starting to give secondary treatment to the poor old Nexus One. Well, I say secondary because it has been almost a fortnight since Gingerbread was released and Nexus S ships with it.

Nevertheless, Nexus One should at-least get an update before 2011 sets in. If you are waiting for the update, just hang tight. In the meantime you can install the Gingerbread keyboard on your device.

Samsung Bada 2.0 To Bring NFC and Updated UI

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 12:01 PM PST

bada-2

Samsung’s Bada OS has been a huge success for them selling millions of handset worldwide. Samsung introduced Bada for its mid-range device in 2010. Bada, which is currently in version 1.2 will be getting a major leap next year with its upcoming version – Bada 2.0.

Bada 2.0 will  introduce near-field communications (NFC) a feature which Google recently introduced in Android 2.3 and Nokia too has been sporting in its C7 handset. Besides the NFC, Bada 2.0 will also bring tons of features like smarter home screen, SDK support for Linux and Mac, 3rd party SNS integration, Multitasking, FlashLite 4 support and more.

Having experiences Bada OS in Samsung Wave S8500, Bada 2.0  will definitely be adding gold to its portfolio specially with the NFC which will open up lots of options for the developers.

Motorola Droid Running Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 09:59 AM PST

After the Samsung Galaxy S, the original Motorola Droid has got its share of Gingerbread love from the modding community. An original Motorola Droid owner – neubanks89 – has managed to build a Gingerbread ROM for his handset from AOSP. However, the ROM is not usable on a day to day basis as it has some issues like Camera not working, no Google Apps and the browser does not work properly.

However, from the comments of users who have flashed this ROM on their Droid, it looks like Gingerbread absolutely flies on the handset. Since the Droid has reached its EOL (End-Of-Life), Droid owners should not expect Motorola to update the handset to Android 2.3.

Nevertheless, I am pretty sure the modding community will definitely cook up a working Gingerbread ROM in the coming few days. Interested Droid owners can read about running Android 2.3 Gingerbread on their phone here.

HTC Wildfire Android 2.2 Update To Roll Out In Europe This Week

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 09:15 AM PST

Quite a few months ago, HTC announced that the HTC Desire, Legend and the Wildfire will be getting their share of Froyo love. The company started first rolled out the Froyo update for Desire and recently started rolling out the Android 2.2 update for the Legend in Europe. Now, the Taiwanese handset manufacturer has announced via an FB status update that they will start rolling out the Froyo update for the Wildfire from this week.

Here is what the company announced on Facebook:

So Wildfire users in Europe will get their Android 2.2 update before Christmas (hopefully), whereas Wildfire owners in other regions of the world will get it by February next year. However, by that time the whole world will be going gaga over their Android 2.3 and Honeycomb (Android 2.4 if rumors are right) update.

Nokia Planning to Launch Windows Phone 7 Devices?

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 08:01 AM PST

Nokia - MicrosoftBoth Nokia (Symbian) and Microsoft (Windows Phone 7) have been hit hard by the rise of Android as a smartphone OS in the last 2 years. Symbian has been continuously losing marketshare to Android, even in the budget category of smartphones. Even Windows Phone 7 has seen very encouraging sales, thanks to Android’s domination. Android is probably in the smartphone world what Windows is in the PC world. However, Android has one huge advantage – it’s free and open. And everyone knows that you cannot beat “free” unless you offer a very compelling product which is better in every way, which Windows Phone 7 is definitely not.

Nokia has already stated that it won’t be using Android as the OS for its smartphones anytime in the near future. It is relying on MeeGo to give a boost to its lagging sales in 2011. But MeeGo is still not ready for a final release.

Eldar Murtazin at Mobile Review has commented in his weekly editorial piece that Nokia is planning to team up with Microsoft and launch smartphones running with Windows Phone 7 under the Nokia brand. While it may sound ridiculous at first, given Eldar’s track record, I can’t help but think that it might turn out to be true.

Even if this rumor does turn out to be true, I doubt that their alliance would be successful in curbing the growth of Android.

Mandatory Alerts About Credit Scores and Mortgage Rates

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 02:00 AM PST

As a nation, we are still reeling from and trying to counter the effects of the last time the housing bubble burst. There has been more regulation of the mortgage industry in an effort to prevent what has happened over the last few years from happening again.
The Washington Post recently reported that starting on the first of the year in 2011, mortgage lenders will have to include "a mandatory alert on how their credit scores might affect the rate quote and terms they receive from their lender."

While experts do not agree on whether or not these new measures will be effective, it is not a bad idea to give consumers an opportunity to reconsider taking a loan that may not be to their advantage. The reality is that while people can check out their credit scores, some will not. This will put that information right is front of them, if they are willing to pay attention.

What it cannot prevent is what happens when someone who can honestly afford to buy Maryland real estate finds that down the road they can no longer afford it because of some change in their circumstances. If this is you and you want to discuss options for foreclosure or a short sale, get in touch with John Day. You can reach him directly via phone at 410-507-2909.

ISPAK Alleges PTCL of Illegally Using Extra Frequency

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 01:46 AM PST

ISPAK Alleges PTCL of Illegally Using Extra Frequency is a post from: ProPakistani

Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan has raised its concern over illegal use of frequency by PTCL.

In a letter written to Frequency Allocation Board, ISPAK has said that PTCL is illegally using extra frequency for its 9.3 Mbps wireless internet service called Nitro.

ISPAK noted that PTCL was allocated frequency band of 1975-1980 MHz and 1895-1900 MHz for use of its CDMA/WLL services. However, company is now using 1975-1981.875 and 1895-1901.875 MHz thus occupying extra 3.75 MHz of band not originally allocated to them.

ISPAK has urged FAB to charge PTCL pro-rated charges for this extra usage and serious action for the violation.

It merits mentioning here that frequency of 3.75 MHz for major cities of Pakistan is worth millions of dollars, meaning that PTCL is possibly causing millions of loss to PTA, FAB and the government if company is proven guilty.

A query sent to PTCL for their viewpoint on this is still awaiting response.

Following is the copy of ISPAK's said letter:

Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan

(ISPAK)

No. 3(5)/2010

aa10 December 2010

Executive Director

Frequency Allocation Board

Government of Pakistan

Islamabad

Subject:          Illegal use of frequency by PTCL

Dear Sir,

PTCL was allocated frequency band of 1975-1980 MHz and 1895-1900 MHz for use of its CDMA/WLL services. Currently PTCL is using this frequency for its broadband services advertised as EVO Nitro. But in reality, PTCL is using 1975-1981.875 and 1895-1901.875 MHz thus occupying extra 3.75 MHz of band not originally allocated to them. PTCL is using this extra band in major cities of the country including Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi, as verified by us through field monitoring.

2.         Extra use of wireless spectrum is not only illegal but also deprives Government from millions of dollars revenue earned on auction of wireless spectrum to telecom operators.

3          We therefore request that punitive action be kindly undertaken against PTCL for illegal use of wireless spectrum under relevant clauses of Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organisation) Act, 1996 and PTCL should be billed for the spectrum charges based on the pro-rata charges of spectrum fee at previous auctioned prices for each telecom region.

With kind regards.

Yours truly,

Wahaj us Siraj

Telenor Opposes Vimplecom/Orascom Deal

Posted: 19 Dec 2010 11:18 PM PST

Telenor Opposes Vimplecom/Orascom Deal is a post from: ProPakistani

Telenor has long expressed its concerns over the expected Vimplecom/Orascom transaction, however, today the group has formally communicated its reservations to VimpelCom Ltd.’s Chairman.

Telenor, in an email, noted that it has determined that the proposed acquisition by VimpelCom Ltd. of Weather Investments S.p.A. is not in the best interests of VimpelCom shareholders and therefore does not intend to support the transaction.

“We strongly support VimpelCom’s expansion in accordance with the principles agreed at the time the company was created.

However, in our capacity as a shareholder of VimpelCom Ltd., we do not believe this transaction makes strategic or financial sense for VimpelCom’s shareholders,” said Telenor spokesman Dag Melgaard.

Telenor ASA holds a 36% voting and 39.6% economic interest in VimpelCom Ltd.

Earlier, VimpleCom had offered USD 6.8 billion, to Naguib Sawiris to get hold of controlling stakes in Orascom Telecom. An MoU in this regard was signed in October. Transaction was scheduled to be completed by February 2011.

Financial Insight of Pakistan Cellular Industry – 2010

Posted: 19 Dec 2010 09:00 PM PST

Financial Insight of Pakistan Cellular Industry – 2010 is a post from: ProPakistani

Pakistan's Cellular industry faced tough fiscal year 2009-2010. Hiked pricing, lower buying power, power crisis, currency devaluation and price war remained major strikers for the cellular companies in year 2009-2010.

Objective of this report is to analyze the industry's growth & performance of individual players. Companies may benchmark their next year's strategy on the basis of Network KPIs given in Section 4 of this report.

1. Revenues

In comparison to 17% revenue growth in FYE 2009, overall industry revenue growth slowed down to 11% in FYE 2010.

Revenues thumb Financial Insight of Pakistan Cellular Industry 2010

Following graph shows the contribution of individual cellular players in the revenue growth. During FYE 2010, 39% of increased industry revenue was picked by Ufone, followed by 32% by Telenor & 15% by Zong.

Warid & Mobilink's share in the increased industry revenue remained less than average industry growth rate of 11%.

2 – Market Share (in terms of revenues)

In terms of revenue, Ufone, Telenor & Zong managed to increase their market share, while
Warid & Mobilink continued to lose.

3. Network Roll-Out

2,000+ sites were rolled‐out during the fiscal year 2009-2010. Ufone & Zong continued to aggressively roll‐out network (Ufone added 820 sites, Zong added 760 sites) during FYE 2010. Warid's network roll‐out remained on‐hold (added 78 sites during the year).

4. Network Utilization KPIs

Industry Revenue/avg. cell site dropped from PKR 8.6m in FYE 2009 to PKR 8.1m in FYE 2010. Following table shows that Mobilink topped network utilization in terms of revenue generation with PKR 10.7m per site, followed by Ufone & Telenor at PKR 9.3m per site.

Revenues per cell site thumb Financial Insight of Pakistan Cellular Industry 2010

In comparison to network size, revenue market share of Mobilink, Ufone & Telenor is higher than network share, while Warid & Zong remained on lower side in terms of revenue share.

5. Conclusion:

Industry's growth is slowing down over the period of time, which means that new subscribers' addition is reducing and future competition will be focused more towards launch of innovative products/services to increase revenue streams.

Subscribers' retention & acquisition of subscribers is already on the top of to-do lists, along-with, customer support is going to play pivotal role in coming days.
