ABC News reports that 2010 was the deadliest year for natural disasters in over a generation. Earthquakes, heat, drought, floods, volcanoes, tropical storms, winter storms and landslides killed over 250,000 people.

Simulating Landslides in a Flume

An article on the ScienceMag website describes a USGS project that simulates landslides in a flume that is two meters wide, 100 meters long and is installed on a very steep hill.

If you want to watch raw videos of the landslide flume experiments and read documentation you can find them on the USGS website. They have about 12 hours of videos documenting the 124 experiments conducted at the USGS debris-flow flume from 1992 to 2009

Disaster Tourism in Indonesia

Tourism typically accounts for about 3% of Indonesia’s gross domestic product. The recent eruption of Mount Merapi almost stopped the flow of tourists to Yogyakarta. However, a new business of “disaster tourism” is developing in Indonesia because people want to see the impact of the volcano in person. he United States is on the cusp of a clean energy revolution. In its first Critical Materials Strategy, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) focuses on materials
used in four clean energy technologies: wind turbines, electric vehicles, solar cells and energy-efficient lighting.The Strategy evaluates the extent to which widespread deployment of these technologies may increase worldwide demand for rare earth elements and certain other materials. It also considers likely trajectories for future supply of these materials and the potential for supply-demand mismatch.

Indiana Will Buy and Resell Natural Gas – $6.9 Billion

The state of Indiana will enter into a $6.9 billion, 30-year contract to purchase natural gas produced from a coal-gasification facility in southern Indiana. The state plans to resell the gas to local utility companies. A goal is to keep their energy money within the state.
