How to find a deal

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 10:06 AM PST

Now that you know how to find coupons and organize them, you need to know how to find the deals. This is something that is going to take you some time. The longer that you coupon, the better you are going to get at this.

Your local store(s)

Each week, get your store’s circular and look through it. I always draw a circle around things that I like or think might be a good deal. After looking through it, start comparing the deals to coupons that you have. You can use the coupon database to quickly search to see if a coupon exists.

When you are shopping in the store, make sure you check for in store deals and the clearance section to see if there are products that you can pair with a coupon for a great deal.

Also find a blogger that covers the stores that you shop at. You can find a list of stores and blogs here. If you don’t see your store there, try googling the store name. Often a blog will show up in the first or second page of results. You can also look for your store on We Use Coupons (a message board site).

By following your favorite blogs

Bloggers do a great job of finding deals and sharing them with you for free! I suggest you follow at least 3-5 blogs. While I would love to be selfish and insist that you just follow Couponing to Disney, that isn’t even feasible…. so I made a list of blogs by state that you can find here.

To make following blogs easier, you can sign up for their feed:

If you have any more tips on finding a deal, please leave a comment and let me know!

How to organize all your coupons

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 09:07 AM PST

Organizing coupons is a task in and of itself. It can take a lot of time and there are so many different ways to organize them. You just have to find a method that works for you!

Organizing insert coupons

Insert coupons are the most popular way to get coupons. And they can be a pain to organize. Some people cut out every single insert (we call this the cutting method) and some people leave all the inserts intact (which is what I do).

If you leave the inserts in tact, you will need to figure out how to organize the inserts.

  • Organize the inserts by date in either a closet, file cabinet or box.
  • If you need to find an insert coupon, use a coupon database to find out what insert it was in quickly.

Organizing your coupons

There are 2 popular methods of organizing coupons. The box (my method) and the binder.

  • Check out how I organize my coupons here. And check out my new box here.
  • If you want to use the popular binder method to organize your coupons, check out a guest post I featured on it here. Also check out this stylish cover for your binder here.
  • You can also read through all the ways my readers organize their coupons here.

Organizing everything else

Check out a post that I did on organizing my rebates and receipts here.

Feel free to add any comments, questions or how you organize your coupons below!

Restaurants.com: Get a $25 certificate for $2

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 08:38 AM PST

Restaurant.com is offering their $25 gift certificates for just $2 when you use the code SPOON at checkout. The certificates are valid for one year but the discount price is only good until January 13th!

You could also join the Dinner of the Month Club which gives you 12 $25 gift certificates plus a $50 gift certificate. You will pay just $24 after the code!

Plus you can go through Shop at Home and earn 30% cash back. And if you are a new member, you will get a $5 bonus on top of the cash back! Just sign up here and after logging in, search for the store in the search box and follow the link to the store's homepage and proceed with your order like normal.

Here are a few restaurants near Disney you might want to check out:

House of Blues located in Downtown Disney (try zip 32830) or at Disneyland (try zip 92801)
You do have to spend at least $35 before coupon and pay 18% gratuity on your total bill.

Garden Grove located at Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resorts (try zip 32830)
You can eat dinner with some of your favorite Disney characters! You must purchase at least 2 entrees (this is a buffet) and 18% gratuity will be added to your bill.

A testimony from a reader…. I ate at the Garden Grove at Disney two weeks ago. We had dinner around 7:30 , and Pluto and Goofy were both there and VERY ATTENTIVE to our kids.
The food was excellent! but a word of warning…this is a buffet and it's pretty pricey, about $31 per adult, and if you have a ten year old child, they are considered an adult. So it was a pricey meal even with the coupon, But the food was great and the Characters were awesome! so it was worth it. Goofy even picked up my daughters napkin off the floor and placed it on my daughters lap. Too sweet!

Todd’s English bluezoo at Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resorts (try zip 32830)
You must purchase 2 entrees and 18% gratuity will be added to your bill.

Shula’s Steak House at Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resorts (try zip 32830)
You do have to spend at least $35 before coupon and pay 18% gratuity on your total bill.

Kimons at Disney’s Swan and Dolphin Resorts (try zip 32830)
You must purchase 2 entrees and 18% gratuity will be added to your bill.

A suggestion from a reader… I'd highly recommend Giordano's. It's Kissimmee location has just been added to Restaurant.com listing – we're so excited! It's just a short distance from Disney & so so good.

Keep in mind that these do not work like traditional gift cards, they are more like a 50% off coupon. Each restaurant has it’s own fine print on what you need to purchase in order to use these gift certificates. I’ve seen them where you have to spend $35 and pay 18% gratuity to use the $25 gift certificate. However, this is still a great deal and a great discount and you can print them right from your computer. An instant gift. Just make sure you read the fine print. Plus they usually don’t expire for a year! Another reader suggests calling the restaurant before you buy the certificate to make they still accept it.

Where to find coupons

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 08:06 AM PST

If you are going to save at the grocery store, you are going to need coupons! Here’s all the places that I know of to find coupons:

Sunday paper
- Types of coupon inserts in paper – Smart Source, Red Plum, P&G, bonus issues like General Mills coupons.
- Not all coupons expire on the same date in the insert!
- Yearly schedule
- Purchase a Sunday paper subscription (You can get multiple at home subscriptions)
- Remember both subscription and newsstand coupons are the same
- Buying paper in store…. remember not all stores charge the same price! My Dollar Tree has papers for half the price of Walmart.
- If you are buying a paper in the store, check to see if it actually has the inserts in it that it is suppose to. It is so annoying to buy a paper, get home, and notice it is missing most of the inserts.
- Recycling (also known as dumpster diving). This is retrieving abandoned inserts in recycling bins or dumpsters. Make sure you check your state laws to make sure it is okay to remove the inserts and always remember to throw your used newspapers into recycling as well.
- Ask a newspaper man what he does with his inserts. He might be willing to give them to you!
- Call your local paper and see if you can go through their leftovers
- Find a place online that sells full inserts or cut coupons (I have personally bought from My Coupon Hunter, The Coupon Clippers and Coupons & Things By DeDe.)
- Buy the biggest city in your area’s paper. Usually the bigger cities have the better coupons.
-  And make sure you save EVERY Coupon!!! You never know if the item might go on sale. Better safe than sorry.

Printable Coupons
Most printable coupons can be printed twice by either using your back button or repeating the steps.

These sites change their coupons monthly. So make sure you print all the coupons you like before the month is over! They will expire 30 days from the date you print them:
Coupons.com
Smartsource.com
Redplum.com
Box Tops for Education
Betty Crocker
Eat Better America
Pillsbury
Snackpicks
Walgreens
All You
CVS

- Visit the websites of your favorite brands. A lot of them will have printable coupons on their sites. Also make sure you sign up for their newsletters. They also email coupons out!
- You can find even more printable coupons posted under the Printable Coupons category here on Couponing to Disney.

*If a coupon seems HOT to you, print it out now. You never know how long they will be available!

*Never copy a printable coupon

Catalina coupons
- these are coupons that print out at the register when you purchase your coupons
- if a store has a catalina machine, make sure you get your coupons. Sometimes the cashier will forget!

Peelies
- Peelies are coupons located on the front of products at the grocery store.
- Peelies are manufacture coupons that can be used at every store.
- Is it ok to remove peelies? That is something you will have to decide for yourself. Some people will remove just a few to use and some feel like they should be left on the product for the person who is buying that particular container.

Blinkies
- What is a blinkie coupon? This is a coupon that is located in the grocery store in small machines in front of products. It is okay to take a few of them.

What is “Couponing to Disney?”

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 07:08 AM PST

“Couponing to Disney” is a term I came up with to describe what I do. I find unique and creative ways to save and earn money and I use it to pay for my yearly trip to Disney World. There is no ‘coupon’ to Disney. (I actually get asked that question a lot!)

You don’t HAVE to ‘Coupon to Disney’. You could follow this advice and use it to Coupon to another vacation, to replace one of your current incomes (some people are able to stop working and stay at home with their kids!), or save for anything that you might want or need. It’s about learning how to pay for things you thought were out of your reach. As the great Walt Disney said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

How do I ‘Coupon to Disney?’

  • I save at the grocery store. I set a weekly grocery budget and I try to come in under budget every week. If my budget is $100 a week for groceries, I would take $100 cash out of the bank and use coupons to save as much as I can at the store. Whatever is left out of the $100 at the end of the week goes into the fund.
  • I use rebates. If I find a rebate to use, I buy the item(s) with that week’s grocery budget. When the rebate check comes in weeks later, it gets deposited directly into the fund.
  • I save found money. ‘Found Money’ is a term I came up with to describe money you weren’t planning on receiving. This could be anything from a refund check from a doctor’s visit a year ago to a birthday check from Great Aunt Myrtle. If you weren’t planning on receiving it, it can go into the fund.
  • And a lot more ways that I am constantly sharing on the blog.

Why do I Coupon to Disney?

  • Disney World is truly the most magical place on the earth to me. I absolutely love Disney World. From the moment I go under the welcome arch, I am surrounded by nothing but magic. I am a kid at heart and I love to meet Mickey and all his friends and I love to go as often as I can. “Couponing to Disney” let’s me do just that.
  • I find the challenge of saving for Disney World magical. Every time I make a deposit into the fund, I sing the song Celebrate You. (My theme song.)

And it is my goal to teach you how to “Coupon to Disney” as well. When I was watching Mickey’s Phillharmagic on the latest trip, I was thinking about all of you and how I want you to be able to share this magic with your kids as well! Disney truly is the most magical place on earth.

It’s time to “Coupon to Disney”!

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 07:02 AM PST

While I was watching Mickey’s Philharmagic for the 3rd time with the family, I started thinking about all of you and how I want you all to be able to share this magic with your family as well.

It isn’t hard to “Coupon to Disney”. Anyone can do it. All the money that you need is already right there in your budget, you just have to find it.

So I am going to teach you how to “Coupon to Disney”. More posts are coming your way right now….

Post your questions about Disney, Couponing, or anything else on this post!

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 05:19 AM PST

Good morning to all my wonderful and amazing readers! I had the best time at Disney World, but I am also happy to be home. Seeing my house was about as joyous as seeing the Disney World welcome arches.

I have so many pictures and it will take me a few days to get through them all, but I do plan to share my favorites with you.

While I was at Disney I had over 10,000 comments. I will be announcing the winners of all the giveaways Tuesday evening at 5 pm cst.

There were a lot of questions asked and unfortunately I do not have time to go through all the comments to make sure I have answered all of the questions. So to make it easier on everyone, I thought I would invite you to re-ask your questions on this post. And if you have any new questions, feel free to add those as well!

Day 10 of No Dining Out January

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 05:10 AM PST

Can you go an entire month without going out to eat? What about a week or a day? Can you cut your dining bill by 20%, 50% , 75% or more? That is what I challenge you to do!

At the end of the 30 days, I will choose one winner who will get $50 to spend however they choose!

The rules:

1. You must challenge yourself. Try to spend less than you spend now. If you don’t go out to eat at all, challenge yourself to try new meals this month. As long as you are challenging yourself when it comes to your family’s eating habits, you can participate!
2. You must comment on at least 10 days worth of the discussion posts in order to be eligible to win the gift card.
3. The winner will be chosen at random. It won’t matter if you have been 100% successful or not.
4. You are allowed 1 freebie meal that you don’t have to count or report back to us about. Please report on everything else though so we can encourage and support one another!
5. Free meals do not count against you. This is a challenge to spend less money going out to eat than you usually spend. If someone else is paying for the meal or you have a coupon to make it free, great!
6. Here is a thought… consider keeping a tally of what you would of spent this month. For example, if you really want to go out for breakfast this morning and you resist… write that down! You could then donate that money to a food bank or deposit it into your fund!
7. Be sure to check out our list of casserole recipes here and the crock pot recipes here and the under 6 ingredient recipes here.

My update

We had breakfast and lunch out yesterday. McDonalds was about $12 for breakfast and Arby’s was about $15. But no dining out for dinner! Mother in law made peppered steak with rice and squash. So happy to have a home cooked meal.

How are you doing?

Here is what we woke up to this morning…..

So glad we made it home from Disney before this hit. But isn’t it beautiful and magical? Thankfully hubby doesn’t go back to work until Wednesday.
