Predicting Solar and Lunar Eclipses – in 100 BC

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 09:40 PM PST

Sometime around 100 BC, Greek “watchmakers” built a device that predicted the date and time of future lunar and solar eclipses. To build such a device they had to understand the math associated with the relative movement of earth and moon in relation to the sun – then build that into a clock-like mechanism. All of this was done while much of the rest of the world still believed in a “flat earth”. Who would have had the time or funding to build this in 100 BC?

The device, now known as the Antikythera mechanism was lost at sea and discovered by divers in 1901. For decades investigators tried to figure out what it was used for.
