The front part of the plane is completely burnt as reported by the rescue workers. The flight was scheduled to land at Bajpe airport which is situated about 30 km away from Mangalore at around 6:00 a.m. The weather was cloudy in the morning.
An airport official reported that no one could understand what happened at that moment and there was absolute confusion at the airport. He said, "There was thick smoke. Soon we saw the flames."
It has been reported by the Air India authorities that the pilots did not show any signal of distress while it was landing and even after it touched the runway. The flight landed in a gorge and so it took some time by the police and the fire service to reach the spot for rescue.
