10 Christmas-Themed Game Spinoffs

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 07:41 PM PST

Where are our Christmas games? Nobody knows, but that sad situation needs to be rectified. To aid the game publishers in this, Phil and Ross brainstormed up ten holiday-themed game spinoffs that should happen f–king now, damn it.

Ross Lincoln’s games

Uncharted: Naughty and Nice

It's December 24th. After nearly dying in the escape from Shambala, Nathan Drake is enjoying some well deserved R&R while shopping for last-minute Xmas presents. Unfortunately, fate has other plans. Stopping for a drink to relieve the stress of trying to find a Kinect unit, Drake passes out. He wakes in London, where he's greeted by a jovial, if tracking-bracelet bedecked Julian Assange who offers him a job he can't refuse: steal the ultimate Wikileaks coup – the list of everyone who's been naughty.

The plan is to publish the list of everyone in the US Government and the WTO who made the list, and the payoff for Drake is promised to be huge. Never mind that the chance to finally find out the secret of a certain Dutch bishop with an army of mythical sweatshop workers is too good to pass up. Unfortunately, Nate gets more than he bargained for as it turns out that Assange isn't the only one seeking the goods. Working through shadowy intermediaries, Krampus has gone rogue and seeks to use the list for his own purposes.

Now Drake is caught in the middle of an information war between total douchebags that spans the globe from the shopping districts of New York to vast wastes of the North Pole. Nate will need to draw on every skill he has – and some coupons he's been sitting on – to make it out alive.

Rome: Total War – Jo Saturnalia!

It's December, 102 BC, and everything in Roma is topsy turvy. Slaves can gamble, masters must serve them dinner, the people are celebrating the end of the year with gifts, and the Gauls are planning to invade while everyone in the eternal city is too drunk from Holiday revelries to notice. That must mean it's Saturnalia, when all good Romans come together to celebrate friendship, family, and the God who ate his own sons.

In this exciting Holiday expansion pack, the world of Rome: Total War gets a yuletide makeover as you plot and scheme against your rivals to dominate the winter holidays through means fair, foul or military, before December 25th, when the Praetorian Guard puts everyone back in their place.

Choose from one of 5 factions (Slaves; Senators; Gauls; The College of Pontiffs and the Merchant class), and strategize wisely during this fast paced scenario set during Rome's version of Christmas.

Features:

  • Bread Riots!
  • Spread your faction's influence throughout the city by building altars to Saturn, providing Saturnalia Sales events, or even lavish parties in honor of Saturn. But don't squander your resources – you might need them to buy soldiers or pay off rapicious hordes in the event of plebian rioting or Gallic invasion.
  • If you play as a Senator, at any time, a Slave class unit can try to force your Senatorial unit to serve them in any manner they see fit.
  • Gambling (if Slave class) to raise peculium to purchase Freedman's status.
  • Unique units for each class, including Gladiator (Slaves), Sycophant (Senators), and Vestal Vigin (College of Pontiffs).
  • Plus a beautifully rendered Rome during the festive season that faithfully recreates the holiday spirit as it existed when Latin wasn't just something you slogged through to finish your prereqs.

.

ChristMass Effect

Having barely survived the fight against the Collectors in the center of the Galaxy, Commander Shepherd and his ragtag crew of battle hardened shipmates return to council space just in time for the greatest challenge they've yet faced: Find a present for their loved ones before the shops close at 7 PM on December 24th.

ChristMass Effect, the second DLC pack bridging the gap between Mass Effect 2 and 3 ramps up the RPG aspects of the acclaimed series, as you navigate the treacherous avenues of the Galaxy's largest shopping mall in search of the perfect gift. Are you the Harbinger of your Seasonal Destiny? Or will you be stuck working on some calibrations? Unlock new Biotic bargaining powers, be a Renegade or Paragon shopper, and discover valuable holiday bargains. Redeem them on XBLA!

Rock Band: Christmas Number Ones

Finally, an expansion pack that doesn't force you to pretend you like Led Zepplin. You and your friends rock out to every single English Christmas number one pop song from 1975 to 2010 and if you're lucky, become the newest band to reach this pinnacle of Anglophile musical success.

Phil Owen’s games

Bethesda to Interplay: Hands Off Our Fallout IP

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 01:26 PM PST

When Fallout Online was announced more than 3 years ago, it sounded like a great idea. Sure, Interplay had just sold the general Fallout IP to Bethesda, but they successfully obtained the license to Fallout Online from Bethesda – under ‘limited circumstances’. That should have made everyone pause, but then Bethesda went and made the best game in the history of the series. Suddenly, an MMO set in the incredible Fallout 3 universe, Pip Boy radio station magic and all, seemed like a very real possibility.

Unfortunately it turned out that Bethesda and Interplay didn’t get along as well as everyone thought, and things quickly devolved into a bitter court battle over the rights to use Bethesda’s original Fallout universe content. And as reported today by Gamasutra, that court battle just went in an unfortunate direction:

According to the latest round of court documents — obtained by Gamasutra — Bethesda aims to make it exceedingly difficult for Interplay’s Fallout Online to contain any references to the known Fallout universe at all, in both marketing materials and the MMO itself.

Bethedsa bought Fallout in 2007 for $5.75 million, and licensed the Fallout MMO trademark back to Interplay, under certain conditions.

On November 19, Fallout property holder Bethesda said in an amended complaint that Interplay is illicitly using Fallout assets to market Fallout Online.

That last bit might sound laughable – how can the Fallout MMO illicitly use Fallout assets? Is this like when George Harrison’s manager Alan Klein bought the rights to the song He’s So Fine while George was being sued for plagiarizing it (which totally f’d him over?)

Specifically, Bethesda recently took issue with Interplay using the Fallout logo and the “Vault Boy” icon to market Fallout Online on the Fallout-On-Line.com website. The website features other recognizable Fallout symbols like the two-headed Brahmin cattle, the mention of the Fallout character “Harold” and other icons of the series.

Bethesda said that in June, Interplay sought approval for the materials used on the website, and then rejected the request. But Interplay allegedly went ahead and put the website live anyway, using the rejected material.

For their part, Interplay claims that Bethesda is essentially reneging on the terms of their licensing agreement. I’d speculate that Bethesda have their own plans for the Franchise, and see an MMO version as a threat to it, so they’re trying to kill it in the womb, but that would be irresponsible. Even so, it’s certainly probable that if Interplay is denied the use of critical imagery and concepts that have come to define the series, it would be a killing blow to the legitimacy of the planned MMO, and that alone reeks of trying to ghettofy the game.

Gamasutra has been all over this case, and the full article is worth a look for more details. I’m not particularly big on MMO’s myself, but those of you who are, what do you think? Would a pip boy/logo-free Fallout feel like drinking generic “cola” instead of Coke? Would you play it anyway? Sound off in comments.

Harmonix is Independent Again

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 11:04 AM PST

We’ve all been watching the news, waiting to see how Viacom’s plan to sell Harmonix would end up. Today, we finally have our answer, and it’s a good one.

Harmonix has announced on their forums that it has purchased itself from Viacom, and that it will once again be an independent studio going forward. Harmonix Developer John Drake had this to say on the sale:

We're happy to confirm the news today that the sale of the company is complete. We appreciate all of your support, comments and warm wishes in the preceding few weeks.

Viacom and MTV Networks have been an amazing home for us over the past 4 years. It's where we launched both Rock Band and Dance Central, worked with The Beatles, Green Day, AC/DC, The Who and thousands of other artists. We want to take a moment to thank everyone in that organization who helped make these awesome games possible.

We're excited to be returning to our roots as an independent and privately owned studio. As for what it means for you, the DLC schedule marches on for Rock Band, we will continue our support of previously released titles and we're hard at work on some unannounced projects that we think you're going to be pumped about.

This is great news, as Harmonix has just released its best title as a developer, Rock Band 3. Going forward, they should be able to make the games they want to make, assuming they can find a publisher willing to work with them.

If you’re interested in seeing Viacom’s press release on the sale, you can find it here.

Madden Price-Gouging Suit Certified by Judge

Posted: 23 Dec 2010 09:29 AM PST

EA’s not having much of a holiday. First, they were sued by a group of college athletes alleging that EA illegally used their likenesses in football titles. Then, they were added to a $400 million lawsuit filed against former Infinity Ward bosses Jason West and Vince Zampella. Now, a U.S. District judge has certified a class-action anti-trust lawsuit against the publisher that alleges EA has used its NFL licenses to artificially increase the price of its Madden NFL games.

According to Hagens Berman (the firm representing the suit) partner Steve Berman,

We believe EA forced consumers to pay an artificial premium on Madden NFL video games. We intend to prove that EA could inflate prices on their sports titles because these exclusive licenses restrained trade and competition for interactive sports software.

You can read the full complaint in PDF form here. In particular, it cites the pricing battle between NFL 2K5 and Madden NFL 2005. With NFL 2K5 retailing at $19.95, Madden was reduced to a price of only $29.95 by November of that year.

Right after that, EA signed their exclusive agreement with the NFL. Since then, the Madden games have retailed at the same price point as other high-profile titles. According to the complaint, this is due solely to the licensing agreements.

Now, I’m not a lawyer, but I think this suit has a pretty steep hill to climb. It would be a lot easier if EA wasn’t selling these games for the same price as every other sports game, including 2K’s NBA series. Of course, you never know what may happen in a courtroom, so we’ll have to wait and see.
