Motorola Milestone Android 2.2 Update Delayed To Q1, 2011

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 11:20 AM PST

The Motorola Droid is one of the most popular Android handset out there. The unlocked bootloader and the vanilla Android experience made it a favorite in the United States. Motorola did launch a European version of the Droid – the Milestone. However, that phone was destined to meet doom right from the word go.

Unlike the Droid, the Milestone had a locked down bootloader. This meant that modding the phone was a very difficult job and it still is. While the original Droid got its Android 2.2 update right after a few weeks of Google announcing it, European Milestone owners are still waiting for their share of Froyo love.

Now, the European division of Motorola has posted on their Facebook wall that the company is still working 'closely' with operators and carriers to deliver the Android 2.2 update for the Milestone. The company says that they expect to roll out the update by Q1 of 2011.

With Motorola set to launch some killer handsets and tablets based on Nvidia Tegra 2 at the upcoming CES 2011, I wonder if the company will actually find it 'useful' to work on the Android 2.2 update for the Milestone.

Milestone owners can vent out their anger on Motorola Europe's FB page.

PalmPad Sketch Gets Leaked

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 10:10 AM PST

With CES 2011 right around the corner in January, it should come as no surprise that HP/Palm are gearing up to release a slew of new devices; included in that list should be the PalmPad. Detailed to have a 9.7" screen, USB 3.0 port and an HDMI-out port, the PalmPad is one of many new tablet-style devices running WebOS. The sketch image shows off an optional docking station can that be attached to the device, as well as what looks to be an SD card slot, volume toggles and a multi-function switch.

Everybody is jumping on the bandwagon for tablet devices, and WebOS is sure to be a big hit with better hardware. Let's hope that HP/Palm really do make this official for CES.

HTC Droid Incredible Running Android 2.3 Gingerbread

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 09:15 AM PST

The Droid Incredible is a very popular handset in the U.S and among the modding community. Now, after the Samsung Galaxy S and the original Motorola Droid got its fair share of Android 2.3 Gingerbread love, the Incredible joins the list. In the case of Galaxy S and the Droid, the Gingerbread ROMs were far from usable on a day to day basis.

However, the Droid Incredible Gingerbread ROM has only a few bugs like a non-working GPS and camcorder. All other functions of the phone like camera, web browser and accelerometer work properly.

Here is a video of Android 2.3 running on the Droid Incredible –:

Kudos to the modding community for such an awesome work! It will take HTC months before they are able to release the Android 2.3 update for the Incredible i.e. if they plan on releasing an update at all.

Droid Incredible owners can read this thread over at XDA on how to flash the Android 2.3 ROM on their handset.

Sony Ericsson’s Playstation Phone Purported To Be “Xperia Play”

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 08:58 AM PST

If a trademark filing showing "Xperia Play" is to be taken seriously and talk from Pocket-Lint about a big launch in February, it would seem that Sony Ericsson's "Playstation phone" might get official and be announced at CES 2011 or the equally as important, Mobile World Congress.

The device features a dedicated gamepad sporting the famous Playstation "shapes" that slides out from under the screen. It's said to be powered by a 1GHz processor with 512MB of RAM and 1GB of on-device storage. Provided it's well received, unlike the PSP Go, Sony Ericsson might be on their way back into the mobile game.

1.5 Million Windows Phone 7 Devices Sold Already

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 08:41 AM PST

Many, including me, believed that Windows Phone 7 hadn’t been selling as much as it was initially expected to. I even mentioned in my last post, that Windows Phone 7 sales hadn’t been very encouraging. With no official word from Microsoft, we had every reason to believe so. But now it seems that I (and many others) will have to eat my words. Today, Microsoft released some sales statistics for Windows Phone 7 devices, and the numbers are looking really good.

Microsoft had launched 10 Windows Phone 7 phones with different launch partners in October. It seems that 1.5 million Windows Phone 7 devices have been sold already, in the first six weeks since its international launch.

Even the developer support has been great, with Windows phone 7 now offering over 4000 apps in the WP7 Marketplace. If the Nokia-Microsoft deal does turn out to be true, Microsoft may be on its way to becoming the third most popular smartphone platform in the US after Android and iOS.

WikiLeaks App Gets Ousted From Apple’s AppStore

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 08:04 AM PST

Igor Barinov, developer of the WikiLeaks app, has received notification that Apple has removed his controversial app from their AppStore. It stores no content and doesn't break any apparent laws – it merely gives easy access to diplomatic cables that were provided by WikiLeaks and the ability to follow their Twitter account. The app was available for 3 days for $1.99 before it was taken down.

It is quite possible that the reason Apple removed it is because in accordance with their ToS and policy on donations (Section 21), an application has to be free in order to collect donations and they can only be collected in specific ways. Hopefully this is not another take-down for being closely “related” to WikiLeaks, and the author can re-submit his application with in-app donations.

Samsung Sells 2 Million Units Of Galaxy S In South Korea

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 07:13 AM PST

The Android powered Samsung Galaxy S is already a huge hit worldwide. Apple sold 1.8 million units of iPhone (3GS + iPhone4) in South Korea from its first launch in November 2009. On the other hand, Samsung just announced that, the company managed to sell 2 million units of its popular smartphone, Galaxy S in just 6 month. The manufacturer already sold 9.3 million units of Galaxy S worldwide.

Galaxy S is quite popular in its home country, since it is the first smartphone to reach the 2 million milestone in South Korea. Samsung is expected to sell 10 million Galaxy S by the end of this year. Galaxy S will be the first Android device to cross the milestone of 10 million units worldwide.

Samsung’s first Android powered tablet, Galaxy Tab and its very own BADA OS powered Wave is also a huge hit. Samsung recently launched the second Google branded smartphone, Nexus S. Next year, Samsung will launch the Bada OS 2.0 with NFC (Near Field Communication) and Updated UI.

Words with Friends is Coming to Android

Posted: 21 Dec 2010 05:00 AM PST

words-with-friendsScrabble has nothing on this. Words with Friends is much loved among Apple product users, but sadly, many Android users have been a bit left out of the fun – until now. There are other word games for Android, but Words with Friends seems to have become the most popular Scrabble-type game for devices, despite the fact that it's not available (yet) for Android users. But it will be soon!

According to the makers of Words with Friends, who were quoted here, "We are working on an Android version, but we’re not ready to share much more beyond that. Our goal is that it will be compatible with the iOS version from day one.”

words-with-friends-screen

This is excellent news for those who enjoy Words with Friends as a fun diversion during the day, but can't actually play with all of their friends thanks to availability problems. Words with Friends is currently available as both a free or paid app – the free version has advertisements after virtually every move you make as you play. Once you've downloaded the game, you set up a username. You can then play your friends in ongoing matches of virtual Scrabble, or you can set up games with strangers.

With the pending release of the Android version of the game, the playing field will be widened dramatically. Competition among groups of coworkers from the local web design company to the district attorney's office is likely heating up already. Game on!
