Google Nexus S Gets Its First OTA Update – GRH78 Posted: 22 Dec 2010 10:35 PM PST Just after a week of its launch, the Google Nexus S is getting its first software update over the air. The OTA (Over-The-Air) update weighs in at 1.9MB and carries the build number GRH78, up from the previous GRH55 build number. There is no official change-log but looking at the size of the OTA, don't expect wonders. Apparently, the update mainly fixes some bugs and 'Maps fixes'. MoDaCo owner Paul posted on XDA with regard to the OTA update –:
Nexus S owners can either wait for the update to be pushed to their phone or enter *#*#checkin#*#* manually and get the update. Nokia N900 Running Android 2.3 Gingerbread Posted: 22 Dec 2010 11:59 AM PST The modding community has done it again! The popular NIITDroid team has managed to port Android 2.3 Gingerbread on the Nokia N900. While the N900 runs on Maemo out-of-the-box, the phone has a huge modding potential. Due to this, various OS's including Android 2.1, Android 2.2 and MeeGo OS have been ported to it. Most features of the phone including Wi-Fi, Sound and 3G are working on Android 2.3. However, the Android 2.3 ROM for the N900 still contains some major bugs which make it unstable for a day-to-day use. As of now, the ROM is not yet out for public consumption. The developers of the ROM have promised to release an experimental Android 2.3 Gingerbread ROM for the N900 before the end of this year. They have also promised to release a fully stable Android 2.2.1 ROM for the N900 by Christmas. I had tried the previous beta of Firefox for Android and was left totally unimpressed. The application was slow, took forever to start and by the time it loaded the desktop version of Engadget on my phone I was able to finish a level of Angry Birds. I am yet to try to the new beta but I hope that the Mozilla team has solved these issues. Android and Maemo handset(s ) owners can download Firefox for their handset from here. Opera Launches Widgets Runtime for Android Posted: 22 Dec 2010 12:25 AM PST As we enter a new decade, web-apps are shaping up to challenge traditional system dependent applications. Google is possibly at the forefront of this change with its highly anticipated Chrome OS. However, several other players are keen to leverage the benefits offered by web apps. Back in October, Opera joined the Wholesale Applications Community, while Mozilla announced its new Open Web App platform. Now, Opera has released a preview build of its Widget runtime for Android, which is based on the Wholesale Applications Community (WAC) 1.0 specification. WAC is an alliance of the world’s leading mobile operators and OEMs, such as Vodafone, Verizon, AT&T, Samsung, Huawei and others. Its fundamental aim is to promote the use of web technologies to enable developers to write an application which can execute on a web runtime upon multiple mobile device platforms. The benefit of using WAC specification is that the same widget will be able to run on multiple phones, irrespective of the underlying operating system. This makes things easier for both developers and publishers. The Widgets runtime released by Opera allows you to download and run existing widgets from widgets.opera.com. Opera’s widgets are platform independent, and already work on all popular desktop platforms including Windows, UNIX and Mac. With WAC Runtime, they will now run even on your mobile phones. WAC 1.0 devices and storefronts are scheduled to launch at the Mobile World Congress 2011.
