Turkish Jet Hijack Attempt Thwarted by Passengers

Posted: 06 Jan 2011 03:47 PM PST

Before 9/11 a hijacking meant landing in some despotic country or a hostage situation in a friendly one. While not pleasant (to put it mildly) it certainly beats the post 9/11 certain death from sitting in a 'flying missile'. Hijackings attempts from now on will either be mass murder in the sky as the passengers are killed trying to avert it, or end the way this one did.

"Passengers on a Turkish Airlines jet have overpowered a man who tried to hijack their flight from Norway to Istanbul, security sources say.

Turkish media reported that the man put on a mask and tried to force his way into the cockpit, saying he had a bomb.

He is said to have demanded that the plane return to Oslo before being subdued by passengers.

The man was arrested when the plane landed at Istanbul's Ataturk airport. No-one was hurt.

Turkish media said the suspect was a Turkish citizen from a Kurdish village in the south-eastern region of Anatolia.

"A ten-year old girl from Canada has discovered a supernova, making her the youngest person ever to find a stellar explosion. The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada announced the discovery by Kathryn Aurora Gray of Fredericton, New Brunswick, (wonderful middle name!) who was assisted by astronomers Paul Gray and David Lane. Supernova 2010lt is a magnitude 17 supernova in galaxy UGC 3378 in the constellation of Camelopardalis, as reported on IAU Electronic Telegram 2618. The galaxy was imaged on New Year's Eve 2010, and the supernova was discovered on January 2, 2011 by Kathryn and her father Paul."

Boehner (R) Sworn in as House Speaker

Pelosi (D) had the second most votes as expected. The big question was how many of her own party she would lose, and the answer was more then any party front runner has in more then eight decades.

http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog/inside-politics/2011/jan/5/anti-pelosi-vote

"When Rep. Nancy Pelosi lost 19 Democrats on Wednesday's vote to be House speaker, it marked the worst showing for a party's nominee in more than 80 years.

Mrs. Pelosi won the support of 173 Democrats, but 18 others voted for someone else and one voted "present." Rep. John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, won the vote with the support of all 241 Republicans who voted.

According to figures from the House historian's office and the Congressional Research Service, the last time a party's nominee for speaker lost that much support was in 1923. On the first ballot that year the GOP's nominee, Frederick H. Gillett, saw 23 lawmakers support other Republicans. Mr. Gillett still ended up winning the speakership on the ninth ballot.
