Arizona: Debris Flow Hazards on Alluvial Fans Posted: 05 Jan 2011 06:55 PM PST “This study evaluated methods to quantify the risk of debris-flow initiation and runout potential to impact alluvial fan flooding hazards in Maricopa County. Debris flows are unsteady, non-uniform, very poorly sorted sediment slurries that are generated when hillslope soils become saturated and fail.” Quoted from the Arizona Geological Survey’s Open File Report. Loud Noise Killed the Arkansas Blackbirds Posted: 05 Jan 2011 06:20 PM PST Experts from the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study and the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wildlife Health Center report that a “loud noise” (probably fireworks) was responsible for killing about 5000 red-winged blackbirds on New Year’s Eve in Arkansas. |
