Arizona: Debris Flow Hazards on Alluvial Fans

“This study evaluated methods to quantify the risk of debris-flow initiation and runout potential to impact alluvial fan flooding hazards in Maricopa County. Debris flows are unsteady, non-uniform, very poorly sorted sediment slurries that are generated when hillslope soils become saturated and fail.” Quoted from the Arizona Geological Survey’s Open File Report.

Corals Provide Evidence of Changing Oceanic Currents

“Examination of deep sea corals reveals that there have been drastic changes to oceanic currents in the western North Atlantic since the 1970s. The influence of the cold water Labrador Current, which is in periodic interchange with the warm Gulf Stream, has been decreasing continually since the 1970s. ” Quoted from the EAWAG press release.

Australia’s Floods Might Take Weeks to Recede

Seasonal flooding in Queensland is especially severe this year and the rain is still falling in many areas. Communities have been flooded, crops have been destroyed, airports are closed and over 200,000 people have been affected.

Loud Noise Killed the Arkansas Blackbirds

Experts from the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study and the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Wildlife Health Center report that a “loud noise” (probably fireworks) was responsible for killing about 5000 red-winged blackbirds on New Year’s Eve in Arkansas.

Oregon State Professor Disputes “Pacific Garbage Patch”

The media has published many reports on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an area in the Pacific Ocean the size of Texas that is littered with plastic and other human waste materials. An Oregon State professor says that these reports are exaggerated.

Australia Flooding Hikes Coke Price

Flooding in Australia has hit the coal and coke producing areas, stopping production for at least six weeks. Now steelmakers and power plants expect to see coal supplies cut by millions of tons and prices to rise rapidly.
