Android Data Theft Vulnerability Detailed Posted: 11 Jan 2011 10:53 AM PST It should come as no shock that Android has security holes, especially seeing that the majority of rooting and jailbreaking techniques exploit recently discovered or undisclosed vulnerabilities in order to escalate privileges and provide end users with the endless amounts of customisation and third party apps. Well there’s a dark side to that as well. An independent security researcher has detailed a proof of concept method to surreptitiously slurp data from an Android handset using a combination of XSS (cross site scripting) and Javascript. With the help of the open source security framework Metasploit, Thomas is easily able to disguise a download as an Adobe update, which actually contains code that will upload files to the attacker. He has tested it on the Android 2.2 emulator as well as an HTC Desire and is successfully able to pull pictures off the SD card. Google has sent word that a fix for Gingerbread is on the way, but that leaves a serious amount of devices running Android 2.2 that are vulnerable to this attack – which doesn’t say much about carriers working to keep users up to date and reduce fragmentation. See video of the demonstration at Vimeo. Sony Ericsson Says Xperia Arc Running Android 2.4 Was A ‘Misconfiguration’ Posted: 11 Jan 2011 09:25 AM PST During the CES 2011, there were hardly Android phones which were running Android 2.3 – Gingerbread. Most of the handsets were based on Android 2.2 (Froyo). However, one handset which caught the attention of the media was the Sony Ericsson Arc. The 'About Phone' screen of the device showed that it was running on Android 2.4. Looking at the version number jump – from 2.3 to 2.4 – it was rumored that the Android 2.4 update won't bring many changes. Well, now there is a twist in the tale. The official Sony Ericsson Product Blog has confirmed that the Xperia Arc runs on Android 2.3 and that Android 2.4 does not exist. The blog has confirmed that any Xperia Arc caught displaying Android 2.4 in the 'About Phone' screen is nothing but a 'misconfiguration'. In the same post, the company has also provided some detail information about the internal specification as well as the software of the Arc. At least this is a good news for the manufacturers. After all, they will have one less Android update to roll out. CDMA Networks Across The World May Get iPhone 4 Soon Posted: 11 Jan 2011 09:17 AM PST At the Verizon iPhone 4 event today, Verizon announced that they will be bring the iPhone 4 to Verizon network in February. Verizon customers and others can pre-order the iPhone 4 from Feb 3 and buy it from Feb 10. However, there was one question which was asked at the conference which goes like this:
Prior to the Verizon launch, iPhone only worked on GSM networks. Now with the Verizon deal, iPhone has been modified to work on CDMA networks too. Since this is a non exclusive deal, Apple will more likely than not use the same phone model to court CDMA Networks across the world. This would sound good for several networks including Reliance in India who run on a CDMA network. So you can expect Apple to launch on more CDMA networks soon, but I don’t see it happening for the next 3-6 months. However, Apple will definitely be taking calls from several CDMA operators for sure. So keep your fingers crossed. Pre-Order Verizon iPhone 4 From Feb 3rd, Buy From Feb 10th Posted: 11 Jan 2011 08:42 AM PST Verizon has confirmed that the iPhone 4 will be coming to the Verizon network next month. The 16GB Verizon iPhone model will cost $199 and the $299 model will cost $299. According to earlier rumors the iPhone 4 data plans will be $29.99 and Verizon will also provide mobile hotspot for the phone wherein you can connect up to 5 different devices to make use of your phone’s data plan. However, if you are an AT&T user, you will have to break your existing contract and then sign a new 2 year contract with Verizon. Also, the AT&T iPhone 4 will not work on Verizon since it is a CDMA network. Considering how fast Verizon LTE network is, this should see a huge shift of customers from AT&T to Verizon. The Verizon iPhone page is already up and can be visited here, but pre-orders won’t open up till February 3, 2010 for new customers. Existing Verizon customers can also get an iPhone 4 from reserved quantity before anyone else. Sign up link for the same is present in the above URL. Posted: 11 Jan 2011 08:12 AM PST Check here on how to catch up with live updates from the Verizon iPhone conference. At today’s Verizon iPhone conference, the Verizon CEO has confirmed that iPhone 4 will be headed to the Verizon network. The new iPhone 4 will support the CDMA technology that Verizon has. The iPhone 4 will be launched on Verizon next month, whereas the iPad had made its debut on their network late last year. This is definitely good news for users who have been waiting for Verizon to launch the iPhone.
The new iPhone 4 has been designed specifically for the CDMA network and was in test for more than a year. This should open up iPhone access for CDMA vendors across the world, so you will see more networks being added by Apple in near future. Verizon iPhone users will most likely benefit from the Verizon LTE network and see higher speeds. There goes millions of AT&T customers. The price of 16GB iPhone 4 on Verizon will be $199 and 32 GB iPhone 4 will be $299. Verizon will also support mobile hotspots out of the box where you can connect up to 5 devices and access the internet. The Verizon iPhone 4 will be up for pre-order on February 3, 2010. Sales of iPhone 4 will start on February 10, 2010 at online stores for Verizon and in Verizon or Apple stores. More updates coming shortly.
