I am working on my to do list of posts I need to write and I need some suggestions from my AMAZING readers. If there is a post that you would like to see me write, please leave a comment and let me know!

I do plan to write all about our trip and what we spent and how we did our dining etc etc.

Day 11 of No Dining Out January

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 05:59 AM PST

Can you go an entire month without going out to eat? What about a week or a day? Can you cut your dining bill by 20%, 50% , 75% or more? That is what I challenge you to do!

At the end of the 30 days, I will choose one winner who will get $50 to spend however they choose!

How can this help you “Coupon to Disney?”

  • Take a look at your current dining out budget. How much did you spend last month going out to eat? That is money that could of gone into your fund instead! Try cutting your out to eat costs this month and adding the difference to your fund.
  • Set a weekly dining out budget, if you resist going out to eat, add that amount to your fund instead.
  • If you were seriously about to go out to eat (like had your coat on and was going out the door or pulled into the drive thru and then pulled back out), add the amount you would of spent to your fund.
  • Going out to eat and using a coupon or paying with a gift card? You could add that amount to your fund too. For example… if you had a $25 gift card to Cracker Barrel and you used it, you could take $25 cash out of your budget and add it to the fund. Or if you used a $10 coupon, you could take $10 cash out of the budget and add it to the fund.
  • Be sure to read my Couponing to Disney training series.

The rules:

  • You must challenge yourself. Try to spend less than you spend now. If you don’t go out to eat at all, challenge yourself to try new meals this month. As long as you are challenging yourself when it comes to your family’s eating habits, you can participate!
  • You must comment on at least 10 days worth of the discussion posts in order to be eligible to win the cash.
  • The winner will be chosen at random. It won’t matter if you have been 100% successful or not.
  • You are allowed 1 freebie meal that you don’t have to count or report back to us about. Please report on everything else though so we can encourage and support one another!
  • Free meals do not count against you. This is a challenge to spend less money going out to eat than you usually spend. If someone else is paying for the meal or you have a coupon to make it free, great!
  • Be sure to check out our list of casserole recipes here and the crock pot recipes here and the under 6 ingredient recipes here.

My update

We were snowed in so there was no way we could go out to eat even if we wanted too. HAHAHA!

How are you doing?

Your Disney Fund – Reduce your monthly bills

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 04:30 AM PST

I decided that I was going to challenge ourselves to “Coupon to Disney” in early June of 2009. I never doubted for a minute that we would be able to. People really don’t realize how much money is absorbed back into their budget. You get that $5 rebate check and you deposit it into your checking account and spend it on a hamburger and it’s gone before you know it. But if you take that $5 and add it to your Disney fund, it really starts to add up. You get excited that you saved that $5 and it inspires you to save even more.

The best thing about Couponing to Disney is that each time you make a deposit to the fund (even if it is a quarter), you fill inspired. You fill elated. And you feel the Disney magic. It’s awesome! And it’s so easy to get the kids involved too. Using the Disney fund, you can encourage the kids to not spend money. When you are in the store and they beg for that cheap, flimsy toy, you can ask them “Do you want to spend $2 on that toy or do you want to add it to the Disney fund?” If you make deposits to the fund a celebration, they might just choose to save the money! This is teaching your kids the value of a dollar at a very early age!

You also start questioning your purchases more. Do you really need another purse? Or can you take that money and add it to the Disney fund. My philosophy is if you were seriously considering spending the money and you resist, add it to the fund! You would of spent it anyways….

You’ll also start thinking about where your money goes. Do you really need a $70 a month gym membership? Do you really need that $30 Netflix subscription. You’ll think things through my thoroughly before you commit to spending your money. If you eliminate or reduce a bill, the difference can be added to your fund instead of absorbed into the budget!

It won’t take long for the money to add up if you are committed to putting any and all extras that you can to the fund. The idea is for the money to not come out of your paychecks. What I mean by this is that you don’t earmark an amount out of the budget to be deposited to the Disney fund. All of the money for the Disney fund comes from creative sources. Use your monthly income for paying off debt, saving for retirement, etc. Couponing to Disney is finding all the money that is usually absorbed into your budget that you don’t realize is there!

And if Disney isn’t your thing, you can Coupon to anything you want! Coupon to Italy, Coupon to a cruise, Coupon to a bigger tv, Coupon to pay off debt, Coupon to pay for retirement, a new car, etc etc. Anything that you dream of having/doing can be within your reach!

So sit back and let me teach you how to “Coupon to Disney”…..

The VERY first thing you have to do when you decide you want to Coupon to Disney is to find the extra money in your budget. Take a piece of paper and write down all your monthly bills. Figure out an average amount for your utilities and write that down. When you finish, it’ll look something like this (this is my budget):

Mortgage: $1065 (this does include our property tax and home owners)
Car: $292
Insurance: $159 (full coverage on 2 vehicles (one is driven by my mother in law) and liability on the 3rd)
Power: $175
Cells: $110
Cable, Internet, Phone: $149
Water & Sewer: $75
Alarm System: $38
Garbage: $12

Now, review your list. Did you write down every little monthly bill that you have? Subscriptions, school fees, etc etc. Go look through the last month of bank statements and make sure you didn’t miss anything.

Do you see anything that you can eliminate today that you don’t need?

Next you need to call each utility about your bill and see if you can reduce the amount you are paying. When you call the cable company, I’ve found I have better luck at reducing the bill if I talk with the cancellation department instead. Be sure to eliminate any channels you don’t need! Call the cell company and see if you are eligible for any additional discounts. We get 5% off our bill because our cell company (AT&T) has an agreement with his employer.

Make sure you call every single one and ask if they can reduce your bill. You might be surprised. Also if you haven’t gotten an insurance quote lately, I suggest that you call 3 different agencies and get a quote and then let your current agent know. Also go over your coverage with your agent. My Mother In Law was paying $110 a month for insurance on her truck. We took over the policy and reduced the coverage. She had the lowest deductible, highest possible coverage plus she also had additional coverage she didn’t need! The new bill was $45 a month! Raising the deductible up the next level can really make a huge difference. We have a $500 deductable on the vehicles and $1000 deductable on the house.

Now if you were able to reduce or eliminate any of the bills, I want you to earmark the money you saved for your fund. Yes this is kind of coming out of your monthly income, however you wouldn’t of taken this initiative and would be paying the higher prices if it wasn’t for the fund. So I call this found money! Make sure you make a point to put this money in the fund every month. Don’t forget or it will just be absorbed into oblivion.

Also, since you have made an estimate on your utilities, if it is ever less than the predicted amount, that difference goes in the Disney fund. For example… I estimate my power bill at $175 a month. When it’s less than $175, I put the difference in the fund. If not, that money saved just gets absorbed! Even if it’s $1, it still goes in the fund. Now if my power bill is over $175, I just pull that money out of other areas of our budget. I don’t take the money out of the fund. How you want to do it is ultimately up to you. But your goal is to estimate your power bill high and not go over that amount but maybe twice a year. I always go over in the hottest and coldest months.

Please comment and let me know how much money you found in your budget! And don’t forget to commit to putting that money every month into the fund! If you aren’t committed, it won’t grow.

Your Disney Fund: A breakdown of my own weekly budget

Posted: 11 Jan 2011 04:22 AM PST

Every Thursday I make a trip to the bank and withdraw $150 in cash to be spent on my weekly grocery, dining out, entertainment purchases etc. I then divide my cash up into categories (they also call this ‘The Envelope System”) and place it in this super cute envelope wallet that I ordered from Timeless Journey. (If you don’t see it in her store, email her and ask her if she could make you one.)

The first category is groceries/paper goods/etc. I put $100 in this category. $100 is for 6 people (I buy groceries for my house and my mother in laws). My goal is to keep it under $100. Any amount left out of the grocery budget at the end of the week goes into the Disney fund!

Next is my dining out category. I put $20 in this category. I try really hard to not spend more than $20. If I do, I have to take it out of the other categories. If any money is left after the week is up, it goes into the Disney fund!

Next is my shopping category. This is the money I use to do the deals at CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid. I have $10 in this category, but I try to keep it under that. Now before you start saying “Well that is a lot! You must not be good at what you do”, I want to tell you this…. Alabama charges 8-10% tax on the pre-coupon total. So if I have a $50 order and I get it down to a $0 subtotal with coupons, I am still going to pay $3.50 – $5 in tax! If any money is left out of this category, it goes into the Disney fund!

The last category is MISC. I put $20 in here and it’s there if we need it. If it doesn’t get spent, it goes into the Disney fund!

Also I break every dollar that I can and the spare change is saved for the Disney fund! This adds up to $8 – $10 a week!

Not included in this budget

No gas is included in my $150 budget. It is separate. I budget $100 every 2 weeks for gas. Most of the time we stay way under that though. The money left out of that category just sits in the bank account.

Expenses for items like clothes, oil changes, etc comes out of the bank account. It does not come out of the $150 a week budget. I have an additional $50 set aside for these expenses a month.

Your Disney Fund – Check to see if your current accounts offer rewards!

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 04:46 PM PST

Did you know that some banks offer points or rewards for using your debit card? Some offer reward points if you swipe your debit card as a credit card (my former bank did). This is a very easy way to earn rewards that can be cashed in for gift cards, credit or cash for your Disney fund!

You can usually find out if the bank offers rewards right on their website. My bank gives me cash back at select merchants when I use my debit card as a MasterCard. It shows up underneath the charge on my online banking statement and I have to manually select that I want cash back. It also offers me additional discounts at some merchants.

Also, be sure to check your credit cards and make sure you are redeeming the rewards you earned by using them. A lot of these rewards will expire without people knowing. Some places offer Disney gift cards as one of the rewards. Be sure to check to see if yours does!

If you discover that your debit card or credit card are offering rewards or incentives you weren’t aware of, leave a comment and let me know! I love hearing that I helped someone find money they didn’t know they had.

The Disney Fund – Evaluate your bank account

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 03:53 PM PST

I am beginning a series on teaching you exactly how to save for your Disney fund (or whatever you are saving for).

The very first thing I want you to look at is your bank accounts.

I bank with BanCorp South and have their free performance checking account. Each month I earn 3% interest on the balance. I also earn cash back at various merchants when I use my debit card.  I also have a savings account with them, but the interest rate is about .25%. So I keep the fund in one of my checking accounts. I just keep a running tally in my register of what is our spendable money and what is our Disney fund. I love earning the interest!

I suggest to you that you take a look at your current account. If you’ve had it for a few years, your bank might have an account that is better than yours. Also if you are still paying a fee for your account and it is just a personal checking account, you might want to look into changing. Personal checking accounts have come a long way and you shouldn’t have to pay a fee at all.

Banks can also be competitive to get your business. When we switched from Compass to BanCorp South, they were offering us a $50 prepaid Visa for switching. We got a fold-able canvas chair for opening mother-in-law’s account. A few months ago one of the local banks were offering a free ipod for opening a new account.

Whatever you choose to do, make sure you do your research. Changing your bank account is a major hassle and it should only be done if the rewards/benefits are worth it. 3% interest is definitely worth it to me!

We also purchased a safety deposit box. It was only $25 for a year! I was really surprised. I thought it was a lot more than that.

Steps to follow:

  • Visit your bank’s website. Check out all the different accounts they are currently offering and make sure you have the best account for your needs. (You could also call your local branch.)
  • Visit other local banks. Check to see if they have better accounts and if they are offering a deal if you switch to them.
  • Consider opening an ING account. They are currently offering a $50 bonus for opening an electric orange account. (I personally have one of these accounts.)

Do you get any benefits from your bank account?

How to shop at your local store

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 01:10 PM PST

When you are learning how to coupon, it is important that you learn how to shop at your local grocery store(s). You will be amazed at how much you can save!

Here’s the steps to take to learn how to save:

  • Visit your store’s website. Check to see if their coupon policy is online and read through it. If they have any clubs, magazines, etc available make sure you sign up for them.
  • Find out what dates your store flyer comes out. Some grocery sales run from Sunday to Saturday and some run Wednesday to Tuesday, etc.
  • Call the local store and ask to speak to the customer service manager. Ask her what types of coupons they accept, if they accept printable coupons (and if they can be in black and white or must be in color), if you can use both a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon on one item and if there are any additional ways to save.
  • When you visit the store, find out if they have a kids club. Also some grocery stores give free cookies or treats to kids. Ask if yours does.
  • Find out if they give any incentives for bringing in your reusable shopping bags. Some stores give money back for bringing your bags!
  • Check to see if your store has a Catalina machine at the register. If they do, make sure you get any coupons that print out during your transaction!

Did you know?

  • Most stores will run sales like 10 for $10 or 5 for $1. Some stores require that you purchase the listed number of items and some don’t. If your store doesn’t, you could purchase just 1 or 2 and still get the discounted price!
  • Some stores ring up their buy one, get one free sales at half price (like $2.50 and $2.50) and some ring them up at full price and zero ($5 and $0). Find out how your store rings up their sales. This will help you when you plan your shopping list.
  • Some stores will give you the item for free if it rings up incorrectly. Always check the shelf price and your receipt to make sure you are charged correctly. If you weren’t, let the customer service desk know!

Also find a blogger that covers the stores that you shop at. You can find a list of stores and blogs here. If you don’t see your store there, try googling the store name. Often a blog will show up in the first or second page of results. You can also look for your store on We Use Coupons (a message board site).
