Disney News: Disney’s Aulani Resort and Spa at Ko-olina

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 09:48 AM PST

Over 3 years ago, Disney announced plans to open a resort on the island of Oahu in Hawaii.  It is in an area called Ko’olina, which is about 20 minutes west of Honolulu/Waikiki.

There will be 359 rooms, including 16 suites and 460 Disney Vacation Club Villas with 21 Grand Villas (up to 12 guests), a spa and fitness center, convention center, 10 pool and recreation features- 4 whirlpools, waterslide, lazy river, and even a snorkel lagoon plus the beach.  There are 4 restaurants and 2 lounges also in the works.

Disney defines Aulani as the “story of the great ones”.  It sounds more like ‘Ow-la-knee’ when you use Hawaiian pronunciation.  The theme they are building is around story-telling and sharing the local stories.  There will be an evening storytelling at a fire pit also.  Even the kid’s club “Aunty’s Beach House” brings in the local element- my kids call everyone “Aunty” or “Uncle”- it shows familiarity and respect.

Recently, they have shared a project going up in the hotel with help from the local school children.  They asked kids send in digital pictures to be part of a mural which will be posted at the resort- they were to focus on one color per picture, then it would be turned into a rainbow: See video of some submissions.
It’s starting to look like it is in it’s final stages on the outside.  The arch symbol is very prevalent throughout the lobby and hotel building exteriors- they are similar to the old Hawaiian huts or “hale” (ha-lay) structure.

Phase I of the Aulani will be opening at the end of August 2011.  Reservations are already open for 2011.

Day 17 of No Dining Out January

Posted: 17 Jan 2011 05:10 AM PST

Can you go an entire month without going out to eat? What about a week or a day? Can you cut your dining bill by 20%, 50% , 75% or more? That is what I challenge you to do!

At the end of the 30 days, I will choose one winner who will get $50 to spend however they choose!

How can this help you “Coupon to Disney?”

  • Take a look at your current dining out budget. How much did you spend last month going out to eat? That is money that could of gone into your fund instead! Try cutting your out to eat costs this month and adding the difference to your fund.
  • Set a weekly dining out budget, if you resist going out to eat, add that amount to your fund instead.
  • If you were seriously about to go out to eat (like had your coat on and was going out the door or pulled into the drive thru and then pulled back out), add the amount you would of spent to your fund.
  • Going out to eat and using a coupon or paying with a gift card? You could add that amount to your fund too. For example… if you had a $25 gift card to Cracker Barrel and you used it, you could take $25 cash out of your budget and add it to the fund. Or if you used a $10 coupon, you could take $10 cash out of the budget and add it to the fund.
  • Be sure to read my Couponing to Disney training series.

The rules:

  • You must challenge yourself. Try to spend less than you spend now. If you don’t go out to eat at all, challenge yourself to try new meals this month. As long as you are challenging yourself when it comes to your family’s eating habits, you can participate!
  • You must comment on at least 10 days worth of the discussion posts in order to be eligible to win the cash.
  • The winner will be chosen at random. It won’t matter if you have been 100% successful or not.
  • You are allowed 1 freebie meal that you don’t have to count or report back to us about. Please report on everything else though so we can encourage and support one another!
  • Free meals do not count against you. This is a challenge to spend less money going out to eat than you usually spend. If someone else is paying for the meal or you have a coupon to make it free, great!
  • Be sure to check out our list of casserole recipes here and the crock pot recipes here and the under 6 ingredient recipes here.

My update

No dining out for us yesterday.

How are you doing?

Saving on family fun with daily deal sites

Posted: 16 Jan 2011 03:41 PM PST

While you are Couponing to Disney, it is important that you continue to have fun with your family but to do it on the cheap.

One way to save on family fun, is to join daily deal sites. These sites have a different local deal every day for a big city near you (I live near Birmingham, AL so I watch those deals).

Here are the ones that I watch:

Groupon - This is probably the biggest and most well known of all the daily deal sites.

Living Social - I love the Escapes (affordable getaways) that they offer.

Eversave - get $2 to spend on any deal just for signing up!

Plum District – get $5 to spend on any deal just for signing up!

Mamapedia - a smaller site, but starting to gain popularity

When you buy a deal on these sites, it usually takes a day or two before you can print them. Most don’t expire for a while, but always make sure you watch the expiration dates!

Be sure to check out my Fun for the Family category where I keep all the current inexpensive things that you can do with the family.
