Touring industry limps out of 2010

It was a tough year for the global touring industry, and North America saw its fair share of cancellations and postponements. Still, things could have been much worse.

“This was the lowest number of shows reported since 2003, the lowest worldwide gross reported since 2005, but only the lowest attendance since 2008,” Ray Waddell writes in Billboard. ”If there is a silver lining, this may be it: Fans still went to see shows.”

Perennial draws such as U2, Bon Jovi and AC/DC stood with newer acts like Lady Gaga among the year’s bright spots. Other big names fared less well, with Simon and Garfunkel, Lilith Fair, and the Eagles among those suffering disruption or outright cancellation.

North American touring receipts declined 26 percent compared to 2009, while attendance slid nearly 25 percent. Not a great showing for an industry segment that was supposed to save music. What this means for 2011 remains to be seen, but clearly it’s going to take more than Bono and Live Nation to make things right. Pricing, marketing, routing, and timing all play roles.
