Samsung GT-i9023 Revealed in FCC Filing; Nexus S with Android 2.4?

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 09:07 PM PST

Samsung GT i9023FCC filings are a treasure trove of information; something that tech bloggers keep scouring through to find details, specs and images of new releases. It seems that Engadget has stumbled upon the Samsung GT-i9023 which just passed FCC testing.

It’s definitely not the Vibrant 4G, as the design is much more rounded. The outline of the phone looks familiar to the Google Nexus S (i9020). A video was leaked last week which had the Nexus S running Android 2.4 (which will likely be called Ice Cream Sandwich). It could very well be the Samsung GT-i9023. It will support HSPA+ connectivity, but the other specifications will be the same as the Nexus S.

Some European retailers have also been listing the i9023 as a “Black Silver” Nexus S, so it’s highly likely that the i9023 is just the Nexus S with a few upgrades.

just got a Software update, the update is called Apps update 1.0 and is basically a performance update for the built-in apps.

Unfortunately there is no changelog available for the update yet. Will update the post when I come across it. Unfortunately this is not a Firmware update so don’t expect those touch lags and rotation lags to just go away.

I am still looking at what performance changes the update has brought, will update this post with more information shortly.

Samsung Vibrant 4G Specs Leak; Offers Speeds Of Up to 21+Mbps

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 09:20 AM PST

The folks over at TmoNews have managed to get their hands on some official documents of T-Mobile which suggest that the carrier will be launching an updated version of the Samsung Vibrant. The Samsung Vibrant 4G will be the first phone from T-Mobile to support download speeds of up to 21Mbps. Right now T-Mobile offers two '4G' enabled handsets – the G2 and the myTouch 4G – which offer download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps.

The Vibrant 4G will pack in a 4-inch SAMOLED screen with WVGA resolution. The handset will be powered by a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor along with the PowerVR SGX540 graphics core. The handset will pack 512MB of RAM and16GB of internal memory. The usual Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3.5mm audio jack, microSD card slot and a 5MP camera without Flash are also present.

Unlike the original Vibrant, the Vibrant 4G also features a front video call camera. T-Mobile has also pre-installed Qik for video calling on the handset. Also unlike its elder brother, the Vibrant 4G runs on Android 2.2 with TouchWIZ on top of it.

Samsung and T-Mobile are also going to pre-load the handset with the movie ‘Inception’, doubleTwist Air Sync, Samsung Media Hub and Amazon Kindle.

I wonder if the Vibrant 4G will be a success like the original Vibrant. The handset hardly has any 'oomph' factor. Plus, original Vibrant owners are still waiting for their Android 2.2 update and they will definitely think twice before buying a Samsung phone now.

Posted: 12 Jan 2011 12:59 AM PST

Samsung_FascinateThe Verizon's variant of the Galaxy S – the Samsung Fascinate – is getting an OTA update. Before Fascinate owners start jumping with joy thinking it is the highly awaited Android 2.2 update, let me tell you guys – it's NOT. The OTA update is basically a maintenance update and aims at fixing some bugs along with improving the GPS performance of the device. The software update is numbered DL09 and should hit the Fascinate owner handsets over the next few days.

Few of the improvements of this software update include –:

  • Ability to change the reminder time and alert tone for calendar events
  • Improved the update consistency of the feed and widgets
  • Music now pauses if you unplug your wired headset or turn off your Bluetooth headset
  • Improved GPS performance
  • Ability to open PDF attachments sent in an email.

Fascinate owners can find the full change-log here.

Hopefully, Verizon and Samsung will soon release the Android 2.2 update for the Fascinate as well, which users have been longing for a long time. Since
